Chuck Eats KC - May / Early June Restaurant Openings and Closings
There is so much going on across Kansas City's restaurant and culinary scene that this is just a portion of the news.
June 2025
- 85°C Bakery Cafe, an international bakery chain, opened its first location in Kansas City at 12061 Metcalf Ave in Overland Park. This bakery serves affordable artisan pastries, coffee, and teas. Located next to the new Aldi and Pan-Asia Mart. See photos below.
- Trader Joe's has announced the location of their third area location. The chain has filed for a building permit near Shawnee Mission Parkway and Antioch Road.
- Nour's will be a Lebanese restaurant on 39th St. in Westport, opening in the Park 39 space (formerly the Plexpod Westport Commons and the Westport Middle School).
- Abelardo's Mexican Fresh has opened a new location at 85th and Wornall Road in south Kansas City. It takes the place of Strip's Chicken at that location.
- Zen Donkey Farms will be a juicery in Fairway, opening soon at 53rd and Shawnee Mission Parkway. This is near Rainy Day Books.
May 2025
- You Say Tomato is bringing back its popular breakfast and lunch service, starting in June. They also plan to continue doing pizza nights (one of my favorite food events).
- Housewife in downtown Grandview, Missouri has been at the top of my foodie bucket list for years. The owner has announced that she is selling the restaurant and moving to Arizona to pursue new opportunities.
- Seasons 52 has closed on the Country Club Plaza. The closing was rather abrupt, according to employees.
- Krab Kingz KCK is closing their Kansas City, Kansas location. Their location on Broadway in KCMO will remain open.
- HomeGrown Merriam has opened in Grand Station at 8807 Shawnee Mission Parkway.
- Chingu KC is closing its location in Westport in late May. Chef Kim cites personal reasons and industry issues, but promises to make his food available via pop-ups and other events.
- Danny Edward's BBQ is closing at the end of May. The owner of the property is not renewing the lease and plans to allow the dispensary next door to expand.
- The New York Butcher Shoppe Kansas City has opened at 4928 Main Street (South Plaza) in Kansas City, Missouri.
- South of Summit Taqueria & Tequila is closing.
- Cafe Gratitude is closing its Crossroads District location on April 27th after 13 years of operation. The restaurant has been struggling for the past year. The owner shared: "While we’ve been finding our footing again after a challenging winter, a number of other signs have pointed us toward the path of closing. It hasn’t been an easy decision—but it’s one we’re making with love, trust, and deep gratitude for all we’ve experienced." We reviewed the restaurant in 2023.
- Go Chicken Go has opened a new location in north Kansas City (380 NE Vivion Rd).
- KC Doner is now open inside the Lenexa Public Market.
- Paul's Drive-in has re-opened in Kansas City, Kansas (1008 Osage Ave.) after a four year hiatus. New owner, Daniel Macias, plans to keep the same menu, but with a small name change for the popular restaurant.
- Session Taco has closed their location at Leawood's Park Place shopping center. Their location in the Crossroads District in KCMO remains open. When I visited the Park Place location in March, it was pretty deserted. It was probably hard to make rent in a luxury shopping center selling tacos and Mexican food.

They have some beautiful fancy cakes.
