How Do You Celebrate Pi Day?

In the past decade, mostly thanks to social media, March 14th has become an unofficial holiday in the United States known as Pi Day. Or Pie Day. Given the American preference for writing out dates in the Month, Day, Year format, 3/14 looks just like the first 3 digits of Pi (Greek letter “π”), a "symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant" concerning circles. People have turned the math part into a bigger pun about my favorite dessert: pie.

Personally, I didn't have any pie this year. In past years, Mom and I like to pick up Tippin's mini pies from Hen House. The grocery store often runs a Pie Day sale.

What is your favorite pie? Do your prefer fruit and sweet pies, or, savory pies? OK, let not count pizza pies here, though they get thrown into observances of Pie Day. My favorite pie is Key Lime. How about you?

Restaurant Openings, Closings, and News

  • The big announcement this week is that Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce are opening a steakhouse next year called 1587 Prime. The 10,000 square foot, two story restaurant will be inside the Loews Kansas City Hotel. This is a newish hotel located two blocks east of the downtown convention center. The name is a nod to the players' uniform numbers.

  • The former Thriftway grocery space on Main Street in Westport is now Midtown Market, a grocery store focusing on Asian foods.
  • KC India Mart is planning to build a larger store at 135th Street and U.S. 69 in Overland Park. The new store will take two years to build and open.
  • In North Kansas City, Clean Eatz is opening soon at 5357 N Antioch Rd. They are offering a cafe with smoothies, burgers, melts, grab-and-go, and meal plans.
  • Meshuggah Bagels' new location in Liberty is open. Look for the new location of my favorite KC area bagel shop at 8600 NE 85th St.

Review - El Maguey

One of the culinary things that Kansas Citians probably take for granted is our abundance of Mexican restaurants. I've written about and reviewed many of those on Chuck Eats KC and have plans for many more reviews and features. You can catch up on some of my regular stops in Our Mexican Restaurant Rotation, Cancun Fiesta Fresh: A Decade of Appreciation, and Dos de Oros: Family Style Mexican in South Kansas City. I really don't understand why Taco Bell exists in Kansas City, when we have so many locally-owned, affordable, tasty, and innovative restaurants and food trucks.

Dining Companion #1 is a regular patron of El Maguey. They like the "reasonably priced ala carte menu." Their favorites include the chile rellenos, the Burrito Ay-Caramba, and the three taco deals. They love the "smokey flavors of the quesadillas" and their white cheese topping.

El Maguey is popular with the Youth Review Crew. On our recent visit with their friends after attending Planet ComicCon, they literally had a table of beef burritos covered in white cheese sauce. This is a good place to take kids. Or hungry teenagers.

One member of the Youth Review Crew a pork and chicken taco. They shared: "The food there is honestly just good, and at pretty reasonable prices too, I'd say its worth the money if you're hungry and need a last minute meal 🙂"

Another member of the crew says "they have pretty good tacos and burritos. A nice, good place if you don't want anything fancy." Their favorite? Three pork tacos.

One change I'd love to see concerns what I had this visit: please add something to tilapia tacos like slaw or veggies or a sauce. As somebody who has discovered fish tacos late in life, I love when restaurants add a few simple extras to fish tacos. Otherwise, loved the tilapia in my tacos this visit.

Shawarmar Needs Your Help

One of our outstanding Middle East fast restaurants in Midtown, Kansas City, Missouri needs your help. On Christmas Eve, a reckless driver demolished the sign for their location on Linwood. The driver had no insurance to pay for the damage. This incident, as well as hassles created by the Main Street streetcar construction, have impacted their business.
